FAQs About Permanent Makeup
What you need to know about permanent brows, lips, and eyeliner
✦ General Questions
What is permanent makeup?
Permanent makeup—also called cosmetic tattooing, micropigmentation, or PMU—is the process of implanting pigment into the skin to enhance features like the eyebrows, eyes, or lips. It’s ideal for anyone looking for a natural-looking, low-maintenance beauty solution.
Is permanent makeup a tattoo?
Yes, permanent makeup is a form of tattooing. The difference is that PMU is designed to fade over time and uses pigments (not traditional tattoo ink) formulated specifically for facial features.
Does permanent makeup hurt?
Most clients say it’s surprisingly comfortable! We use a strong numbing cream before and during your session. Some clients describe it as light pressure or scratching—many even fall asleep during the treatment.
Is permanent makeup safe?
Yes—when performed by a licensed, experienced professional using sterile tools and high-quality pigments. We follow strict safety protocols and only use products that are safe for the face and eyes.
How long does permanent makeup last?
Permanent makeup lasts between 1–3 years on average. Fading depends on your skin type, age, sun exposure, skincare routine, and overall lifestyle. Color boosts are recommended every 12–24 months to keep things fresh.
Can permanent makeup be removed?
Yes. PMU can be lightened or removed using laser or saline removal techniques, though results vary. We don’t offer removal in-house but can refer you to professionals we trust. If you have existing work, send us photos before booking.
How does permanent makeup fade over time?
It fades gradually, becoming softer and lighter. You may notice subtle changes in tone or shape over time. Sun exposure, exfoliating skincare products, and your body’s natural metabolism all play a role in fading.
✦ Eligibility & Prep
Who is not a candidate for permanent makeup?
We cannot tattoo anyone who is:
Pregnant or breastfeeding
Taking blood thinners
On Accutane (must wait at least 6–12 months post-treatment)
Diabetic and insulin-dependent (unless cleared by a doctor)
Epileptic (must have doctor’s approval)
Experiencing skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, or rosacea near the treatment area
Prone to keloid scarring
Under active medical care (consult your doctor first)
Has active cold sores (for lip services—antiviral medication is required beforehand, contact us if you need a prescription)
Has previous PMU from another artist (please email clear photos first—we take these cases individually)
How should I prepare for my appointment?
To ensure the best results:
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and blood thinners for 24 hours
Stay out of the sun for 72 hours prior (no sunburns)
Pause any retinol, acids, or exfoliants at least 10 days before
Avoid Botox around the area to be treated for at least 7 days prior.
Avoid filler around the area to be treated for at least 4 weeks prior.
Avoid laser resurfacing facials within 4 weeks prior to your appointment
Avoid chemical peels and microdermabrasion within 2 weeks of your appointment
Hydrate and arrive with clean, makeup-free skin
Get a good night’s sleep and eat a good meal before so you can feel refreshed and ready for your transformation
Can I apply my own numbing cream before my appointment?
No — please don’t. We use a professional-grade topical anesthetic formulated specifically for PMU procedures. Applying your own cream can interfere with the treatment and lead to unexpected results.
✦ Brows, Lips & Liner
What’s the difference between nano brows and powder brows?
Nano brows are created using a tattoo machine to draw fine, realistic hair strokes—great for clients who want a very natural look. Powder brows are soft and shaded, like a filled-in makeup look. Combo brows blend the two techniques.
Why don’t you offer microblading?
Microblading uses a hand-held blade to cut into the skin, which can cause scarring and trauma over time. We use machine-based techniques like nano and powder brows, which are gentler, longer-lasting, and safer for all skin types.
What if I’m not sure which brow style is best for me?
No problem — we’ll guide you. During your appointment, we’ll map your face, talk through your goals, and recommend a shape and technique based on your bone structure, skin, and preferences.
Can I get lip blushing if I have dark or cool-toned lips?
Yes! We specialize in dark lip neutralization, a multi-step process that warms and balances natural melanin before layering in your desired color. It’s ideal for clients with deeper natural lip tones looking for a soft, even tint.
What is a lash enhancement vs. custom permanent eyeliner?
Lash enhancement is a subtle eyeliner tattoo that’s applied within the lash line, giving the illusion of thicker, fuller lashes without looking like traditional makeup. It’s perfect for those who want a natural, everyday look.
Custom permanent eyeliner, on the other hand, can be tailored to your style — from a soft shaded look to a defined wing. It enhances your eyes more noticeably while still being smudge-proof, waterproof, and totally low-maintenance. We’ll work with you to decide which is best based on your eye shape, routine, and preferences.
✦ Aftercare & Healing
How long is the healing process?
Full healing takes about 8 weeks, but the surface heals sooner:
Brows: 10–14 days
Lips: 5–7 days
Eyeliner: 7–14 days
You may experience mild flaking, swelling, or tenderness in the days following your service. We’ll provide detailed aftercare to ensure the best results.
Can I work out after my appointment?
Avoid facial sweating, steam, and intense workouts for 7 days after your procedure. Sweat can push pigment out of the skin and lead to patchy healing. Light movement is fine — just no hot yoga or saunas!
Can I wear makeup after my appointment?
Yes, but not directly on or near the treated area for at least 10–14 days. Once fully healed, you can return to your normal routine. Just be gentle with makeup removal!
Will I need a touch-up?
Yes! A perfecting session is recommended 8–16 weeks after your initial appointment. This allows us to refine color, shape, and retention. After that, annual or biannual refreshes help keep your results fresh.
What if I have previous permanent makeup?
If you’ve had work done elsewhere, please send us clear, makeup-free photos before booking. We’ll assess whether we can go over it, need to color-correct, or recommend removal first. Every case is different!
